The idea was submitted for the Miami Foundation's annual Public Space Challenge in 2014. We looked at great cities in the States and abroad and realized that Miami was missing a truly remarkable public square. Since there were no public squares planned in the downtown development maps, the likelihood of developers incorporating one voluntarily is a pipe dream.
The submitted image is a collage featuring a 3D model of Downtown Miami created during a studio at the University of Miami, along with an old-time square photo. We used the block west of the AAA (now the Kesaya Center) and north of the Freedom Tower. The perimeter of this area would then be lined with shops, installations, and live music.
Our hope was that through this temporary event, the dialogue on Miami's public space could become a serious topic for its residents and all of Miami-Dade.
