AN ADDITION TO THE WORLD FAMOUS BRILLHART HOUSE. THOUGH THE ADDITION IS LARGER, THE ORIGINAL HOUSE KEEPS THE FRONT STAGE AS IT SHOULD. ALL OF THE MATERIALS, SIGHT LINES, AND INTERIOR TREATMENTS FROM THE ORIGINAL HOUSE WERE INCORPORATED INTO THE ADDITION. THE SITE COMPOSITION IS OF THREE VOLUMES, TWO LOW PROFILE VOLUMES WHICH INCLUDE THE ORIGINAL HOME AND AN ENTERTAINMENT AREA, BOTH FACE EACH OTHER WITH OPEN PORCHES. THE TALL TWO STORY VOLUME HOUSES MOST OF THE FUNCTIONAL AND SLEEPING ROOMS AND IS CONNECTED TO THE ORIGINAL HOME VIA A A STEEL AND GLASS BRIDGE THAT FLOATS OVER THE GARDEN. THERE IS A FOCUS OF OPENINGS ON THIS NEWLY CREATED THREE SIDED COURTYARD WHICH WILL HAVE A OOLITE STONE WALKWAY TO THE CENTRAL POOL. THE STRUCTURAL TECHNIQUE, EMPLOYS EXPOSED CONCRETE STEM WALLS AND SPANNING I-BEAMS AS THE PRIMARY STRUCTURAL MEMBERS WHERE STEEL COLUMNS WRAPPED IN IPE RISE UP FROM, HOWEVER WHERE THE ORIGINAL HOUSE FLOORS AND CEILING ARE FRAMED WITH WOOD, THE NEW WING IS STEEL AND CONCRETE. THIS APPROACH WILL MITIGATE SOUND, ALLOW US HAVE PLENTY OF GLAZING, AND BE SAFE FOR THE FAMILY TO HUNKER DOWN DURING A HURRICANE.
